Information Privacy Law @ Seattle University Law

Traditional privacy law is merged with modern technology to enable student to spot issues and focus on best practices in emerging business models.  This course examines legal and ethical issues related to information privacy, an individuals right to control his or her personal information held by others. Topics include: privacy policies (including ToS & EULA) contract law, privacy rights as tort, privacy rights as human rights, privacy as copyright, administrative Law w/ regards to privacy, governmental surveillance and private tracking, data portability v. privacy, Information as an assets, Users rights w/ regard to information.

Law, Policy, Ethics & Information IMT-550 & LIS550 @ University of Washington’s Information School – iSchool

This course examines legal and ethical issues affecting information professionals, with an emphasis on problems involving competing values. Topics include:

  • the interaction of government and law with information networks
  • the duties and roles of information professionals in legal compliance
  • information as intellectual property, and exceptions including fair use, academic exceptions, fair dealings
  • privacy rights, proprietary rights, human rights, disability and accessibility rights, user rights, moral rights
  • governmental surveillance and private tracking

Freedom for IP – Founder, Freedom for IP is a grass roots volunteer organization dedicated to exploring the interaction of Intellectual Property legislation with Human Rights. Freedom for IP is committed to providing resources, references and news about issues related to Intellectual Property and Human Rights. Freedom for IP is actively engaged in researching and discussing ideas on how to balance conflicting interest of IP and Human rights in an information age.

ATJWeb.org – Administrator, Access to Justice (ATJ) Web seeks to help guide the development of technology to help those in need. Through the ATJ Technology Principles we can use technology to give everyone fair access to the justice system a reality in Washington State and beyond.

Students For Free Culture Faculty Advisory – National member since 2005 and Founder of Seattle University Law Students for Free Culture 2007 and co-writer of the bylaws.  Free Culture strives to create a world where all can participate in culture without artificial limits. The free culture movement seeks to develop this culture by promoting four things:

  • creativity and innovation;
  • communication and free expression;
  • public access to knowledge;
  • and citizens’ civil liberties.

JR- Jigsaw Resonance Seattle area NPO that runs a maker space on Capital Hill.  I blog for JR and am a keyed member. JR’s is at the cutting edge of DYI culture and provides a community space for all to explore their creative side.

Copynight.org – Seattle Member, Copynight is a monthly social gathering of people interested in restoring balance in copyright law. We meet over drinks once a month in many cities to discuss new developments and build social ties between artists, engineers, filmmakers, academics, lawyers, and many others.
